This semifinals match is a re-match of the Wimbledon quarterfinals where Nadal beat del Potro in five sets. That match was a marathon and so was Nadal’s last one where he beat Dominic Thiem 0-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-5). Del Potro beat John Isner in the quarterfinals 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.
Nadal holds an 11-5 all-time record against del Potro and he has won the last three matches facing him. In those three matches two were this year at the Grand Slams of Wimbledon and the French Open and the other one was last season where Nadal took out del Potro in the US Open semifinals.
Both of these players have big serves and are great from the baseline. Only once in the last three matches has it been won in straight sets. Two of Nadal’s last three matches have gone more than three sets and in those matches he lost the first set each time. He won his last match in the quarters where he lost the first set 6-0.
In last year’s US Open semifinals match del Potro took the first set 6-4, but then lost the next three badly 6-0, 6-3, 6-2. Would not be surprised if that happens again, as while I think Nadal will win the match del Potro will win the first set.
Tip: del Potro to win first set – +120 at Bovada
Williams has only lost one set in the tournament so far and she is the big-time betting favorite in this semifinals match. In her last match she beat 8th seed Karolina Pliskova 6-4, 6-3.
While Sevastova has had three of her five matches in the tournament go to three sets her last match was impressive. In that match she beat 3rd seed and defending U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens 6-2, 6-3. She is the 19th seed in the tournament and in her last two matches has taken out the 3rd seed in Stephens and the 7th seed in Elina Svitolina.
This is the first ever match between these two players. Sevastova does not have a strong serve and that puts her behind the eight-ball in this match considering Williams is great on the return of serve. Serena will dictate this match from the get go and will dominate throughout. It will not be a close match, which is why the smart bet is to take Williams to win 2-0.
Tip: Williams to win 2-0 – -175.44 at Bovada
