Pep Guardiola will lead Manchester City on the road this weekend for Match Day 3 of the 2018/2019 English Premier League season.
The champions will take their title defense to the West Midlands on Saturday where they are set to be hosted by newly promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers.
City wrecked havoc over the weekend, as they blitzed past Huddersfield with a 6-1 win to register one of their most remarkable victories in recent memory. The Terriers had managed to contain the hosts within the opening quotas, up until the 25th minute where their ranks were broken through a Sergio Aguero opener.
The Argentina international- who was tactfully lying in wait in an offside position- collected a brilliant goal kick straight from Ederson and with Christopher Schindler well beaten, adeptly lifted the ball over Ben Hamer who was caught in no man’s land.
Gabriel Jesus doubled the advantage just seven minutes later as he took aim of the near post with a low shot, although it should not have counted as the Brazilian appeared to be in an offside position in the build up to the match.

It mattered little however with ten minutes left to the interval, as Hamer committed a howler having initially caught Benjamin Mendy’s cross; one that allowed Aguero to pounce on the rebound and net his second of the day. Jon Gorenc Stankovic nonetheless brought one back at the other end of the pitch, as he poked in from Steve Mounie’s flick after John Stones was caught out in the 43rd minute.
Despite having salvaged a goal back, it was quite evident that the result was well beyond reach of Huddersfield, as the Citizens exhibited more attacking intent against the visitors whose energy level had began to wane.
David Silva found the fourth three minutes after the restart through a peach of a free-kick that perfectly sailed over the wall and into the top corner, while Sergio Aguero capped off a well rounded individual performance by completing his hat-trick with a volley in the 75th minute.
Ben Hamer’s forgettable outing at the Etihad was wrapped up five minutes from stoppage time, as he was beaten by his own defender through an unlucky rebound to gift City their sixth goal of the match. The emphatic victory propelled Manchester City to the summit of the Premier League with six points, albeit on goal difference ahead of Liverpool who are their closest rivals in the title race.
Wolves on the other hand have only picked up a point in their first two matches – a 2-2 draw with Everton on their opening day of the season. Their most recent outing ended in a 2-0 defeat away to Leicester City with goals from James Maddison and an own goal by Matt Doherty; the Foxes hanging on for the victory despite playing for over 25 minutes with ten men.
Hosting the champions this weekend will as such be a daunting task for Wolves who, like many other teams in the bottom half of the table, will be hoping to maintain Premier League status at the end of the season.
Kevin De Bruyne is ruled out for around three months after the 27-year old suffered a nasty injury in his right knee, while goalkeeper Claudio Bravo sustained an Achilles tendon injury in training and will be out for an unspecified period.
Wolves forward Ivan Cavaleiro is set to continue with his recuperation from a back injury, while summer acquisition Leander Dendoncker could be fit enough for the bench having only resumed training after his 2018 FIFA World Cup expedition with Belgium.

Sergio Aguero put up a gutsy performance on Sunday, with his precise finishing earning him a hat-trick against David Wagner’s side. It was the Argentine’s 13th overall hat-trick for Manchester City, and his ninth in the Premier League; only two behind former Blackburn and Newcastle forward Alan Shearer who holds the record for the most hat-tricks in the League.
Aguero’s grandstand performance also saw him score his fifth goal of the season in all competitions, seeing as he bagged a brace during the 2-0 win over Chelsea in the Community Shield. He for a fact stands a good chance of adding to his goal tally, especially with Guardiola’s new tactical approach of breaking down highly defensive teams.
Despite losing Kevin De Bruyne to a nasty injury, Manchester City proved their depth in numbers by thumping Hudderfield Town, and will quite rightly keep up the winning run on their trip to Wolverhampton.
