Alexander Zverev is ranked No.3 in the world in the ATP Rankings, but he’ll face a tough opponent at the 2022 French Open on Wednesday in the up-and-coming Sebastian Baez. We’ve got a play in that match and two on the women’s side in Leylah Fernandez vs Katerina Siniakova and Ajla Tomljanovic vs Varvara Gracheva in Day 4’s French Open best bets.
Alexander Zverev made quick work of his first round opponent in the French Open with a 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Sebastian Ofner. He may be in for a tougher test on Wednesday against Sebastian Baez, who defeated Dusan Lajovic 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 on Monday. Baez picked up a win in the Estoril Open with a straight-sets victory over Francis Tiafoe in the final earlier this month and also played Zverev tough in a 6-7, 3-6 loss in the Round of 32 at the Italian Open a couple of weeks ago.
Baez appears to have a bright future ahead of him, and it shouldn’t be long before he’s competing for wins in matches like this one. He’s not quite there yet, but in the best-of-five format, we do like his chances to at least play some competitive sets and potentially force this match to four or even five sets before Zverev puts him away. Leylah Fernandez and Katerina Siniakova both took care of their first-round opponents in straight sets ahead of this matchup. Fernandez is a deserving favorite here in the midst of a strong season that includes a tournament win in the Monterrey Open back in March. But Siniakova enters this second-round matchup with a lot more experience and career success on clay. She has reached the third round or better in each of her last four French Open tournament appearances; that experience and her strong form in round one make her well worth an upset pick at around +150 with most betting sites.
Ajla Tomljanovic completed one of the first big upsets in the 2022 French Open with her 7-5, 7-5 victory over No.5 seed Anett Kontaveit. Tomljanovic is 7-5 on clay this season and should have a ton of confidence going into this second-round matchup against Varvara Gracheva, which looks to be a much easier one on paper. Gracheva narrowly escaped the first round with a 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 win over Astra Sharma and doesn’t enter this matchup with much success on clay to speak of. Roll with the hot hand and take Tomljanovic to win on Wednesday.
