Arman Tsarukyan will put his five-fight winning streak on the line this Saturday night when he takes on Mateusz Gamrot in the main event of UFC on ESPN 38. With Tsarukyan and Gamrot both sitting right outside of the lightweight division’s top 10, the winner of this fight could crack the top 10 and earn a bigger test in their next fight.
Arman Tsarukyan (18-2-0) has won each of his last five fights, earning back-to-back knockout wins and Performance of the Night bonuses in his last two bouts against Christos Giagos and Joel Alvarez. Tsarukyan is 17-1-0 in 18 professional fights since 2016, and his one loss over that stretch came against Islam Makhachev by decision in 2019. Makhachev is one of the best lightweight fighters in the world.
Mateusz Gamrot (20-1-0) entered the UFC with a 17-0-0 record that included a dominant five-year run as the KSW Lightweight Champion in Poland. Gamrot lost his UFC debut by split decision in the Fight of the Night against Guram Kutateladze before bouncing back with three straight wins over Scott Holtzman, Jeremy Stephens and Carlos Diego Ferreira. All three of those wins were by stoppage with two knockouts and one submission.
While Tsarukyan and Gamrot aren’t household names outside of the fight community just yet, this main event should give both of them the opportunity to shine. Both of these lightweights are dangerous on and off the mat, and at 25 years old (Tsarukyan) and 31 years old (Gamrot), both appear to have bright futures in the division. The winner of this bout will get a crack at a top-ten opponent next.
This is a tough one to call. Tsarukyan has the edge in raw talent, which is why he’s the clear favorite in this one. But Gamrot has the experience to counter that and may not be as big of an underdog in this bout as the betting odds would indicate. Given the potential value this betting line is providing, we’re going to take a shot on Gamrot to win in a hard-fought decision, even though Tsarukyan is the more likely winner. Look for a competitive fight regardless of who comes out on top.
