The 2024 ICC T20 World Cup continues on Thursday morning as Afghanistan face heavyweights India in Barbados for their first match of the Super Eight.
At -454.55 with Bovada, India are strong favourites for this clash. Afghanistan offer good value for the upset at +350.
Afghanistan played their final group match on Monday night, losing to the West Indies by 104 runs. Bowling first, the Blue Tigers struggled, conceding a high total of 218. In response, regular wickets meant they never got going as they were bowled out for 114 in just 16.2 overs.
Despite their poor finish to the group stage, Afghanistan have still won three matches this tournament, knocking out New Zealand to finish second in Group C. However, top cricket bookmakers aren’t too hopeful about their chances, giving them odds of +210 to reach the semi-finals.
On the other hand, India got through the group stage unbeaten, with their last match against Canada abandoned due to rain. With three wins and a no-result, the Indians finished top of Group A.
Playing on the slow American pitches, Rohit Sharma and his side are yet to hit a score over 120 in this World Cup, but their bowlers have been excellent. Heading into the next stage, India are favourites to win the T20 World Cup at +175 with online bookies.
Although Afghanistan are constantly improving at each major tournament, beating this Indian side looks like a bridge too far. India have far more quality and experience across the park, and while -454.55 may look short at first glance, it might be overs.
As the top wicket-taker in the T20 World Cup so far, left-arm fast bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi has been a key reason behind Afghanistan’s success. With the majority of his overs coming in the powerplay, the 23-year-old is able to set attacking fields and draw mistakes out of opposition batsmen. If Afghanistan are going to compete in this match, expect Farooqi to play a major role with two or more wickets at +175 with top bookmakers.
Coming across to the more batter-friendly pitches in the West Indies, the Indian batsmen look set to be much more impactful. Despite the team’s poor scores, Rishabh Pant has been a standout, leading his side with 96 runs at an average of 48. Coming in at number three, back the destructive batsman to continue his great start with 30 or more runs at +125 with top sports betting sites.
