Belgium vs Italy match analysis
Belgium made it through to the last eight after a 1-0 victory over reigning Euro champions Portugal with thanks to a wonder-strike from Thorgan Hazard in the 42nd minute. The world’s no.1-ranked side will be up against it on Friday night, however, with superstar duo Eden Hazard (hamstring) and Kevin De Bruyne (ankle) both expected to miss the clash in Munich.
Despite the injuries to Hazard and De Bruyne, this Belgian side have shown throughout the tournament that they have what it takes to go all the way in Euro 2020. They will be out to exact revenge against Italy, who got the better of them at Euro 2016 with a 2-0 result in the group stage. With an in-form Romelu Lukaku up front and a defence that has conceded only one goal in four games, the Red Devils will be confident of progressing through to the semi finals.
Italy have been equally as impressive and come into the Euro 2020 quarter finals fresh off a 2-1 extra-time win over Austria. Substitutes Federico Chiesa and Matteo Pessina proved the difference, both netting goals in the first half of extra time. The Italians had not conceded a goal in Euro 2020 prior to Sasa Kalajdzic’s strike in the 114th minute.
The Azzurri are set to have a full contingent of players to choose from on Friday night. Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne have proved a handful for defences in the tournament so far, and they could be the ones to break down this Belgian defence. Italy boast two creative fullbacks in Leonardo Spinazzola and Giovanni Di Lorenzo, so the back three of Belgium will have plenty to deal with.
Belgium vs Italy predictions & best bets
Match winner: Belgium
Going by the official FIFA rankings, Belgium are the best team in the world and, on paper, should be disposing of Italy and progressing to the Euro 2020 semi finals. As we know, matches are not won on paper, but considering they just conquered Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal in the round of 16, we feel like the soccer bookies may have this wrong. Italy are coming off a gruelling victory against Austria in extra time, and we think the fresher legs of Belgium may prove the difference.
Romelu Lukaku will head into the quarter finals with a fair bit of confidence having scored three goals in his four games thus far in Euro 2020. He netted 24 goals in the Italian Serie A for Inter Milan, so he knows how to get through an Italian-style defence. With that sort of form for both club and country, we expect ‘Big Rom’ to get his name on the scoresheet yet again.
