Belgium vs Portugal match analysis
With three wins next to their name from as many games in Euro 2020, Belgium enter their round of 16 encounter against Portugal as +145 favourites with soccer bookmakers. They were workmanlike when defeating Finland 2-0 in Budapest after making several changes to their starting 11, but a strong second-half performance looks to have them primed for their first knockout match. Kevin De Bruyne got through a full 90 minutes for the first time this tournament after recovering from his facial injury, while Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku were at their menacing best.
Belgium will be confident of making their way through to the quarterfinals of Euro 2020 considering the inconsistent performances Portugal have put in throughout the tournament. With weapons like De Bruyne, Hazard, Lukaku and Dries Mertens in the Belgian attack, the Portuguese defence – which has already conceded six goals this tournament – will have plenty to worry about on Sunday night.
Outside of Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal have been rather lacklustre in their three games so far at Euro 2020. Outside of a strong final 10 minutes against Hungary in their opening match, they have hardly set the world on fire. Portugal were hammered 4-2 by Germany before a 2-2 draw against France sealed their spot in the last 16, albeit in less than convincing fashion.
Of the seven goals Portugal have scored this campaign, five have come from Ronaldo and three of those have come from the penalty spot. With Bruno Fernandes relegated to the bench, it was left to too few against France, so Portugal will need to find another gear or two if they wish to keep their defence of the European Championship alive.
Belgium vs Portugal predictions & best bets
Match winner: Belgium
It is hard to imagine how Belgium are not a shorter quote with Euro 2020 betting operators. They have been thoroughly impressive in their group matches and enter the round of 16 on the back of an easy 2-0 win. With Kevin De Bruyne hitting full flight, Romelu Lukaku in dynamic form and the likes of Eden Hazard, Dries Mertens, Axel Witsel and Yannick Carrasco doing their thing, this Belgium side is loaded with talent. Their defence – consisting of Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Jason Denayer with Thibaut Courtois in goal – has conceded just one goal in this campaign, so they seemingly have answers all over the ground for whatever questions Portugal will pose.
Kevin De Bruyne has gotten through 135 minutes of Euro 2020 football after sustaining a facial injury in the UEFA Champions League final. In that time, he has been crucial to the success of the Belgian side with two assists and a goal to his name in the tournament already. He could have had a third assist, when Romelu Lukaku found the back of the net off a pinpoint pass from De Bruyne against Finland, only for VAR to rule it offside. Given the form, the +400 available for De Bruyne to continue on his creative ways and bag another assist looks too good to refuse.
