Friday night football wraps up in Brisbane with the Broncos hosting the North Queensland Cowboys at Suncorp Stadium in round four of the 2024 NRL Premiership.
The Brisbane Broncos are battling their way through a horror injury run, while the Cowboys are yet to be beaten this season. However, these Queensland derbies always bring out the best in both sides, although only one can win on Friday.
The Broncos have suffered further losses to their starting side with Reece Walsh (facial injury) sidelined for an unknown period and Brendan Piakura (ankle) ruled out until round eight. Adam Reynolds has been named as captain to return in the halfback position, Tristan Sailor lines up at fullback, and Jaiyden Hunt slots into the second row. Coach Kevin Walters has also named Corey Oates in the interchange bench in place of Martin Taupau.
North Queensland Cowboys coach Todd Payten has named Zac Laybutt to return to the centres with Tom Chester dropping back to the reserves. The rest of the Cowboys’ side is unchanged.
The Broncos were -161.29 favourites with online bookmakers when betting markets opened, blowing out as far as +115 before firming back into -105.26 with the naming of captain Reynolds. While the Cowboys have had a strong start to the season, two of their three wins have come against sides that finished in the bottom five last season. The Broncos have a stronger forward pack than their opposition, and in front of their home crowd, the Broncos should secure a win on Friday night.
Deine Mariner has quickly emerged as one of the hottest young talents in the NRL. He has scored freakish tries against the Roosters and Panthers already this season, capped off by a double in round two against the Rabbitohs. Mariner’s return to Suncorp with Reynolds at the helm has him as a deserving favourite to record another try-scoring double at +460 odds.
The last time these two sides met at Suncorp, Jeremiah Nanai was the only shining light for the Cowboys, positioning himself perfectly to have three tackle breaks, a line break and two tries in six touches of the football. Since then, Nanai has improved his work rate and opportunities for scoring dramatically. Having scored at least one try in his last two matches at Suncorp, he is a great value bet at +160 to score another in this game.
