Round two of the 2024 NRL Premiership kicks off on Thursday night with the Brisbane Broncos hosting the South Sydney Rabbitohs at Suncorp Stadium.
Both sides are coming off first-round losses in Las Vegas. Who will be best placed to get their first win of the season on Thursday?
The Rabbitohs will be without Jacob Host (omitted) and Jai Arrow (shoulder). Tallis Duncan is named to start in the second row and Shaquai Mitchell is on the interchange bench.
Broncos coach Kevin Walters has named Brendan Piakura to start in the second row despite failing a head injury assessment in the loss to the Roosters in round one.
Walters has made just one change with Xavier Willison being named on the extended bench, while Martin Taupau has been named on the interchange and Corey Jensen is expected to partner Payne Haas in the front row.
The Broncos have been well-supported favourites since markets opened, shortening from -114.94 to -277.78 with NRL betting sites. Although the Rabbitohs have won each of their last four matches at Suncorp Stadium, they will not be expected to win a fifth. Brisbane should not only be capable of winning their first home game of the season, but they should also win by 13 or more points at +135 odds.
Brisbane’s Selwyn Cobbo has produced some incredible form in his last 11 matches at Suncorp Stadium, scoring at least one try in eight of those games. His move to the centres has been without issue so far, and be it Isaiah Tass or Richard Kennar who defends Cobbo on Thursday night, the Broncos star should be able to score two or more tries (+500).
Dry, fast conditions are predicted for Brisbane this week, and the Broncos will be eager to put on a strong performance in front of their home fans. Although each of the last four matches at Suncorp between the Broncos and Rabbitohs have finished below the total points line, Thursday should be a high-scoring affair with more than 41.5 points scored (-111.11).
