Ciryl Gane (8-0) has been extremely impressive through his first five fights in the UFC with a perfect 5-0 record. Wins over Tanner Boser and Junior dos Santos were nice, but Gane established himself as a legitimate contender with his convincing decision victory over Jairzinho Rozenstruik. Another win over a solid heavyweight would cement Gane’s position in the top five in the division and bring him a step closer to a title fight.
Alexander Volkov (33-8) put on an impressive display in his most recent bout against Alistair Overeem as he scored a knockout win and a Performance of the Night bonus. Volkov now has two knockouts in a row and has improved to 7-2 overall through the first nine fights of his UFC career. The 6’7″ heavyweight’s only two losses have come against Curtis Blaydes and Derrick Lewis, and a shot at redemption against one of those top-four contenders could be Volkov’s next test if he can solve the undefeated Gane.
It will be interesting to see if Ciryl Gane changes his approach to this fight after receiving public criticism from UFC president Dana White after his win over Rozenstruik. Gane dominated the fight with an excellent technical performance, but White said that Gane had a chance to show what he could do on the main event stage and his win lacked excitement. Will Gane stick to his usual slow-and-steady approach against Alexander Volkov, or will he leave his comfort zone and try to score a highlight-reel finish instead of another decision win?
Both of these fighters are most comfortable on their feet, as Volkov is a strong boxer and Gane is a strong kickboxer. Volkov is the more aggressive striker, while Gane if the more athletic one. Assuming Gane doesn’t change the game plan from his last fight too much, he should find a similar result here. Gane’s agility should allow him to parry Volkov’s attack and chip away at him with strikes as he does. This type of fight isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but it should lead to another win for the favorite.
