Entain Group, the parent company of Ladbrokes, is being sued by a customer for aiding his problem gambling by not stopping him when he exceeded his deposit limit. The customer, named Simon Rose, claimed that the bookmaker allowed him to place bets up to £1.8 million over a period of seven months from 2015-16.
The customer lodged the complaint at the High Court, claiming Ladbrokes allowed him to lose £231,000 while betting £18,000 every day. Rose alleged that the company permitted him to make a daily deposit of £20,000 even though he initially placed the deposit limit at £1,000, all while knowing that he earned just £3,000 per month.
According to Rose, the bookmaker failed to protect him from gambling harm when it allowed him to continue gambling recklessly without any measure of restriction in place. Ladbrokes is yet to confirm or refute those claims, although the company admitted that Rose had borrowed money so he could play more than he has. Rose then self-excluded from all gambling in May 2016.
A fortnight ago, Entain Group was fined a record £17m by the UK Gambling Commission for failures relating to anti money laundering regulations and socially responsible gaming.
