The UEFA Champions League final is an all-English affair for the second time in three years as Manchester City take on Chelsea in Porto on Saturday night.
Manchester City head to Portugal in a bid to claim their first-ever European trophy, and the newly crowned Premier League champions could not be better placed to do so. City have a fully fit squad for the final and under the guidance of Pep Guardiola will prove hard to beat, as the Spaniard manager is two from two in Champions League finals as a manager.
Chelsea have been the surprise packet of the UCL final 16, having barely scraped into the EPL top four. Their manager, Thomas Tuchel, had a taste of what the UCL final is all about after being on the losing end of the spectrum last year when the manager of PSG.
Online bookmakers have Manchester City as favourites to lift the European Cup after 90 minutes at odds of -108.7, while Chelsea are priced at +333 to replicate their underdog win over Bayern Munich in the 2012 final.
Manchester City have enjoyed a dominant season on both the European stage and the domestic front. Despite losing their last two matches against Chelsea, City have long been aimed towards taking out their first Champions League. They put four goals past PSG in their semi-final tie, and if they bring that form to Portugal, it should be too much for the Chelsea backline to curtail.
Since Thomas Tuchel has taken over the managerial role at Chelsea, he has had the better of Pep Guardiola and Manchester City. The German has been behind the two consecutive victories against their rivals, including a 1-0 win the FA Cup semi-final in April. The Blues then backed it up with a 2-1 victory in the Premier League on May 7 at Etihad Stadium thanks to a last-minute Marcos Alonso winner.
Their recent record in this matchup isn’t great, but Man City have won each of their last seven Champions League matches. Having secured the EPL crown a fair time ago, they have had plenty of time to prepare for a tilt at their first European title. With an attacking line-up that has many potent weapons, we expect the blue side of Manchester to have all the answers to whatever questions Chelsea may pose.
Phil Foden has started in all but one of City’s 12 UCL matches and has three goals to his name. The attacking midfield is starting to forge a name for himself as a big-game footballer, and that reputation has earned him a spot in the England squad for Euro 2021. With 16 goals in all competitions this season, we expect Foden to make an impact on the biggest stage in club football this weekend.
In the second all-English UCL final in the last three years, we are backing Manchester City to blow Chelsea off the park with a strong 90-minute display. Led by the likes of Foden, Gundogan, Sterling and De Bruyne, the City line-up looks to be too good for a Chelsea side that barely scraped a top-four finish in the EPL.
