Sure, sure, the Super Bowl was a pretty exciting gambling event.
But have you ever had a few dollars on the Oscars?
For the first time in the history of the USA, you’ll be able to bet legally on Hollywood’s biggest night.
That’s right, New Jersey became the first state this week to allow its new bookmakers — both in-person and online — to take bets on the Oscars.
This marks the birth of the ‘novelty bet’ in the USA — markets that have generated significant interest, success and controversy in the UK and Australia over the last five years.
Bookmakers around the world have used novelty markets like Oscars betting to attract new customers and demographics to the industry that may never have otherwise opened an account.
Typically, there are restrictions on the maximum wagers members can make, given the heightened opportunity for leaked information and corruption.
Mattias Stetz, CEO of Rush Street Interactive — which is responsible for New Jersey gambling website PlaySugarHouse.com — said that his customers can add a new layer of experience to viewing the Oscars.
“We believe a new audience may be fans of the Oscars and want to make their viewing experience even more exciting by placing a bet on their favorite movie,” Stetz said.
Betting was made legal in New Jersey in 2018 after the state successfully lobbied the Supreme Court to overrule the prohibition on sports betting.
