While its closest neighbour benefits from the fast-growing online gambling industry, New York Governer Andrew Cuomo continues to keep his state from cashing in.
In an interview with WAMC last week, Cuomo, who’s opposition to mobile sports betting has been well established over the last 12 months, continued to downplay the success of the industry.
Cuomo dismissed the legitimacy of the revenue figures posted by states like New Jersey, which have legalised sports betting and online sports betting since the Supreme Court removed the prohibition on sports betting throughout the USA.

New Jersey has created hundreds of new jobs, provided new, safe, regulated betting markets for customers that would otherwise turn to black market and offshore bookmakers and has registered more than $13 million in tax revenue since establishing the industry.
Thankfully for New Yorkers that would like to see the practice legalised in their state, Cuomo’s opinions are not shared by everyone. New York lawmakers Gary Pretlow and Senator Joseph Addabbo Jr. are pushing hard to introduce legislation and issue is one that can have bipartisan support.
The online aspect of legalised sports betting is a crucial element to the industry. More than 80 per cent of sports betting revenue from New Jersey last month came from online wagering, according to the State.
