Will Novak Djokovic have any trouble in his third-round matchup in Tokyo? His match features one of our three best bets for this Tuesday’s Olympics tennis card.
Novak Djokovic’s quest for a gold medal in the same year as a potential calendar Grand Slam is one of the top stories at the 2020 Olympic Games. Will Djokovic have any trouble in his third-round matchup in Tokyo? His match features one of our three best bets for this Tuesday’s Olympics tennis card.
Novak Djokovic is on an absolute tear this season. It’s difficult to imagine anyone beating him when he is this healthy and focused. The fact that the Olympic Games is played in a best-of-three format instead of a best-of-five could come into play in the later rounds if Djokovic slips up against elite talent, but he isn’t going to have any issues with a player of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina’s caliber. And that isn’t a knock on Davidovich Fokina; he just isn’t in Djokovic’s tier.
Of course, the moneyline odds at tennis betting sites are accounting for this clear discrepancy by making Djokovic a massive -2521 favorite. Bettors could take Djokovic at with a six-game handicap at -120, but the under 17.5 games at -107 is the sharper play. At evens, the price is right too.
The Colombian pair of Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah are off to a fantastic start in Tokyo with straight-set wins over Pablo Carreno Busta and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (6-2,6-4) and over Oliver Marach and Philipp Oswald (6-4, 6-1). Marcus Daniell and Michael Venus have had a less impressive path into the third round with a 6-3, 7-6 win over Egor Gerasimov and Ilya Ivashka in the first round and a walkover in the second round after Dutch opponent Jean-Julien Roger tested positive for COVID-19.
Daniell and Venus are talented players, but they don’t have the experience together and synergy that Cabal and Farah have. Cabal and Farah already have two tour-level titles together this season with wins in Dubai and Barcelona. This pair is in great form and should be a bigger favorite than the odds at most sports betting sites suggest in this spot.
Pablo Carreno Busta is having a strong season in 2021 with two singles titles including the German Open in Hamburg right before the Olympics began. Dominik Koepfer, on the other hand, entered the Olympics with a 3-5 record over his last eight matches. Carreno Busta has earned victories over Tennys Sandgren (7-5, 6-2) and Marin Cilic (7-5, 6-4, 6-4) so far in Tokyo, while Koepfer has faced easier competition to this point with wins over Facundo Bagnis (3-6, 6-3, 7-5) and Max Purcell (6-3, 6-0).
All signs point to a comfortable win for Carreno Busta in this matchup. The Spanish pro is the more talented player and is in great form. The one head-to-head match between these two players came in 2019 when Carreno Busta cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win in Shanghai. Expect another convincing victory in this meeting on Tuesday.
