The acting executive secretary of Nigeria’s National Lottery Trust Fund, Bello Maigari, says revenue from sports betting would be dedicated strictly to sports promotion in the country.
Bello announced the decision while hosting some young gymnasts from the Tony International Gymnastics (TIG) team in his office.
Speaking on how prominent sports betting has become and its contribution to sports, Maigari said, “Anywhere you go in Nigeria, you see betting shops springing in different corners, and they mostly bet on football.”
“Sports has been given a prominent position in the ranking of interventions in the agency because the proceeds we are generating comes from entertainment.”
“We will channel the proceeds for the promotion of good causes which is meant to impact on the well beings of Nigeria.”
He expressed the agency’s readiness to support to the young gymnasts while complementing them for their achievement.
“To these kids growing up in the sports will be excellent athletes. They will be famous and their sky will be their limit. The Fund has always been at the forefront supporting the development of youths in Nigeria,” he said.
The Tony Asuquo led TIG team won 22 medals including 10 golds, 6 silver, and 6 bronze at the Africa Gymnastics Level System Championships in South Africa.
