After months of delays and uncertainties, sports betting will arrive in Rhode Island on Monday, November 26.
The official unveiling will see Speaker Nicholas Mattiello and Senate President Dominic Ruggiero place the state’s first legal wagers at Twin River Casino in Lincoln.
It has been a long time for the Ocean State, which voted in sports gambling legislation back in June.
Twin River’s wagering service was scheduled to launch at the start of October, but that was pushed back to Thanksgiving due to unexpectedly tricky negotiations with prospective betting partners.
That deadline also went by the wayside, and Twin River executive Patti Doyle said only last week that a date for the rescheduled launch had yet to be set.
If the Monday opening goes ahead as planned, Rhode Island will become the seventh US state to host regulated sports betting since the US Supreme Court struck down the nationwide ban earlier this year.
New Jersey, Mississippi, West Virginia and Pennsylvania have already given the green light, while Delaware has expanded on its existing sports betting laws.
A tribal casino in New Mexico started accepting wagers on sports in October, even though the state has not yet legalised the practice.
