NFL Divisional Round: Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. New Orleans Saints Betting Preview

The New Orleans Saints are 5-0 straight up (SU) and against the spread (ATS) in their last five games against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After winning their first two games against the Buccaneers this season, the Saints will try to earn a spot in the NFC Championship Game with another win over Tampa Bay this Sunday night.

New Orleans completely dominated the Chicago Bears in a 21-9 win on Sunday that wasn’t as close as the final score looked as the Bears scored a touchdown in the closing moments of the game when the result was already decided. Drew Brees had 265 passing yards and two touchdown passes in the win including one to Michael Thomas who hadn’t caught a touchdown pass all season before that one. The Saints are now 3-0 SU and ATS over their last three games with an average margin of victory of 19 points per game over that stretch.

Tom Brady racked up 379 passing yards and two touchdown passes in Tampa Bay’s 31-23 win over the Washington Football Team last Saturday. Over the team’s current 5-0 SU and 3-2 ATS run, the offense is averaging 35.8 points per game. The Buccaneers’ defense is playing well too with only 19.8 points per game allowed over the Tampa Bay’s last five games.

Tampa Bay has a 12-5 SU and 9-8 ATS record this season. Three of their five losses have come by a field goal or less in a one-point loss against the Chicago Bears and three-point losses to the Los Angeles Rams and Kansas City Chiefs. The other two losses came to the New Orleans Saints; one by a final score of 34-23 in New Orleans and one by a score of 38-3 at home.

For whatever reason, the Saints have Tampa Bay’s number this year. New Orleans finished the regular season with a top-five defense allowing only 310.9 total yards and 21.1 points per game. That defense has held Tom Brady to just 229 passing yards per game with only two touchdowns and five interceptions. Perhaps things will be different in the playoffs, but considering how thoroughly New Orleans dominated its first two games against Tampa Bay this season, it’s tough to go against the Saints as such small favorites in this spot.
