The marquee matchup in Matchweek 5 of the 2021/22 EPL season pits Spurs and Chelsea against one another at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday afternoon. BettingPlanet’s football expert presents his best bets and match analysis for the latest edition in one of English football’s fiercest rivalries.
Tottenham v Chelsea match analysis
Tottenham suffered their first defeat of the EPL season when falling 3-0 to Crystal Palace in what was a dramatic conclusion to a game that looked headed for a 0-0 draw. However, following a red card to Japhet Tanganga in the 58th minute, Tottenham went on to concede three goals in 16 minutes. The result was Nuno Espirito Santo’s first loss as Spurs manager, which saw the Lilywhites plunge from the top of the table down to seventh place. With an even bigger test coming up this weekend, Tottenham will be out to make sure they do not ruin the good month of work they have put in to start the season.
Unfortunately for Spurs, their injury list is one of the longest in the league. With key defenders Cristian Romero, Davinson Sanchez and Tanganga all missing, it will be up to their second-stringers to help nullify the impact of Romelu Lukaku, Kai Havertz and the like. Lucas Moura and Heung-Min Son are expected to miss as well, leaving Harry Kane to shoulder a heavy load in attack.
Chelsea could not have been any more impressive to begin the EPL season, with only a 1-1 draw at Liverpool in Matchweek 3 keeping them from a perfect record. Marquee summer signing Romelu Lukaku has hit the ground running with three goals in his three games in his second coming as a Blue. Outside of Christian Pulisic and N’Golo Kante, who are missing through injury, this Chelsea line-up is near full strength and will be confident of claiming three points at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
All the focus for Chelsea automatically goes towards the performances of Timo Werner and Lukaku in attack, but it is their star-studded midfield who consistently get the job done. The likes of Havertz, Mason Mount, Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho are regular scorers, and if they are not the ones putting them away, it is almost a certainty that they will be the ones setting them up.
Tottenham v Chelsea EPL predictions & best bets
Correct score: Chelsea 3-1
Having remained undefeated in all competitions in 2021/22, Chelsea are perfectly placed to make it 13 points from a possible 15 to begin the new EPL season. Fresh off a 1-0 win over Zenit St Petersburg in the UEFA Champions League, the Blues are sure to be raring to go with a five-day break between games. This clash consistently throws up low-scoring encounters, but with Tottenham’s issues on the injury front and the red-hot form that Chelsea are in, we are expecting goals aplenty as the Blues look to solidify themselves as genuine title contenders.
Despite not yet hitting the scoresheet in the 2021/22 EPL season, we expect Mason Mount to find the back of the net against Tottenham and continue his progression as one of England’s best young talent. With an assist to his name already this season and playing a key role for both club and country over the past few months, we expect Mount’s class to shine through on Sunday afternoon.
