Kamaru Usman (17-1-0) and Gilbert Burns (19-3-0) were originally scheduled to meet at UFC 251 last July before Burns was forced to pull out of that fight due to a positive COVID-19 test. The UFC Welterweight Championship that the fans have been waiting for is finally set to commence this Saturday in Las Vegas when Usman takes on Burns in the main event of UFC 258.
Usman’s first and only loss came all the way back in May of 2013 in his second professional fight. Since then, he is a perfect 16-0 including an 11-0 record in the UFC and a 3-0 record in UFC Welterweight title fights. Usman most recently defended his title in dominant fashion with a decision win over Jorge Masvidal at UFC 251 after Masvidal agreed to step in as a late replacement in the main event for Burns.

Burns has strung together six straight wins including four straight wins since returning to welterweight in 2019. Burns flew up the welterweight rankings with four wins over a 10-month span that included an impressive TKO win over Demian Maia and a dominant decision win over former division champion Tyron Woodley. The 34-year-old will finally have the chance to prove that he is the best welterweight in the UFC by dethroning Usman for the championship.

The issue for Burns in this fight is that his biggest strengths aren’t likely to work against Usman. Burns has established himself as an elite grappler that is capable of controlling the tempo against most fighters; however, Usman’s takedown defense is among the best in the world, and he has experience neutralizing great grapplers. Usman’s versatility and extremely high in-ring IQ make it difficult to imagine a scenario where Burns catches the defending champ off guard.
Usman will likely keep this fight off the ground and use his five-inch reach advantage to pick apart Burns in the striking game. Over a long five-round championship fight, Burns may get a takedown or two, but Usman’s elite wrestling skills should allow the champion to work his way out of trouble. Burns will give Usman a better fight than Masvidal did, but Usman’s well-rounded game will lead him to yet another unanimous decision victory.
