Two unlikely finalists take to Centre Court on Saturday in London to contest the women’s singles final at Wimbledon, with Jasmine Paolini taking on Barbora Krejcikova.
Both have been to this stage of a major before. Paolini fell one match short of lifting the French Open title last month, while Krejcikova went all the way in Paris to win her maiden Grand Slam in 2021.
Now, one of them will be crowned the 2024 Wimbledon champion — something tennis bookmakers certainly did not expect ahead of the tournament, with both barely registering in the outright odds.
Paolini has put together a daring run at SW19 over the past 12 days. The Italian has won more grass matches in the last week than all of her career previously —
and she’s looked good doing it.
Paolini began by racing through her first three matches without dropping a set, defeating Sara Sorribes Tormo, Greet Minnen and Bianca Andreescu.
She was then tested by No.12 seed Madison Keys before the American retired at 5-5 in the third.
After trouncing No.19 seed Emma Navarro in the quarter-finals, she then outlasted Donna Vekic in the longest-ever women’s singles semi-final at Wimbledon, prevailing in two hours, 51 minutes.
Krejcikova also went the distance in her semi-final.
The Czech was a major underdog against 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, and even more so when she dropped the first set 6-3.
However, the veteran powered back into the match, winning the next two sets to oust the tournament favourite and book her spot in the 2024 Wimbledon final.
Ahead of the final four, Krejcikova had defeated several other worthy opponents as well.
After passing her first three rounds against Veronika Kudermetova, Katie Volynets and Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, she ran into the in-form Danielle Collins in the round of 16.
Krejcikova raced past the American in straight sets, then did the same to the dangerous Jelena Ostapenko in the quarter-finals.

There is a reason tennis betting sites have this clash at $1.70 to $2.25 in the outright winner odds: it’s an even matchup.
While the bookies give the slight edge to Krejcikova after her monumental upset of Rybakina, the smart money is on Paolini to win her first Grand Slam title.
The Italian played brilliantly in the pressure moments against Vekic. She kept her unforced errors low, first-serve percentage high, and jumped on any break points.
This is exactly what will be required against Krejcikova. The Czech will push Paolini, and likely take a set off her, but her effort in the semi-finals will have taken a lot out of her.
Back Paolini to get past her in three sets, doing what she could not in Paris and claiming a maiden major.
